As you can see, it was badly damaged when some unknown liquid had stained the image. There is also a lot of pesky spots through out the image.
I used the Clone Tool in Paint Shop Pro to try to clean it up a little. This is the results of those efforts. I Thought it did'nt come out half bad.
This is a side by side comparision:
How did I do it?
Well I used the clone tool in Paint Shop Pro version 6.0. I set the clone brush tip to a size of about 4 with a round shape.
Next, I zoomed in on the image a few times to help pin point those pesky spots first. Now, I pointed the tool to an area just outside one of the spots and hit the Shift key to copy a 4 pixel sized section to the clipboard.
Then I placed the tip of the tool on the spot and clicked the mouse, and presto, the spot went away. I did this through out the image.
Next came the stains. I basically followed the same procedure as I did for the spots, working on my left shoulder area and the back ground.
I then turned the image over to my wife, Marie, who has a lot more patience for the detail work, to tackle the area around my ear and hair. In no time at all we were done, and this is the result......
Hope it gives you some ideas for attacking some of your old and damaged photos. This helps to show they are not beyond redemption.....
This is a photograph of my wifes grandparents on their wedding day. Not sure, but the photo, when I got it, was dated January, 1914.
First, there is a major rip in the photo on the right side. There is also a rip that runs right through the grooms right ear. There is a smaller rip in the upper left side of the photo.
I also noticed what appears to be a line that runs down from the brides right cheek. I decided to tackle some of these imprefections.
And here's my cleaned up version:
Now a side by side comparission:

And finally, just for fun, I applied the colorized technique to the bride and groom and this is what the results came out looking like:
